January 2025 Programming

Jan. 18 & 19

Master Classes w/
Arnela Mahmutović and Jim Peters

Each workshop will include a short lecture, guided exercises, and experiments highlighting techniques core to Arnela and Jim’s processes. The weekend includes 8 instructional hours, over the course of two days. Local artists are encouraged to sign up for one or both workshops at www.thewoodshed.art Space is limited so sign up now to ensure your spot.

The workshops will culminate with a public reception on January 19, at 4:15 pm.

Arnela Mahmutović is an Albany based painter whose influences overlap and combine with her Balkan heritage, resulting in an intimate and shifting relationship between displaced bodies and invented spaces; constructed worlds in which each live as agents of their own narrative. Her Masterclass will focus on “the hand” as a conduit to explore notions of identity, memory, and personal history.

Jim Peters is a figurative artist and a member of the Visual Arts Committee at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. He presently teaches drawing at the Rhode Island School Of Design and painting at the Fine Arts Work Center Summer Program in Provincetown, MA. His Masterclass will focus on figure drawing, and the interplay of the figure and interior spaces, as well as an exploration of tonality to push and pull depth and volume.

The Eclipse Mill is a wheel chair accessible building.

This program is funded in part by a grant from the Cultural Council of Northern Berkshire, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Additional support provided by New England Puppet Arts and the Eclipse Mill.

Back to the Woodshed!

The Woodshed isn’t any place in particular and it’s the exact place you need to be! It’s both a creative space and a state of mind — where artists come together to work alongside one another, enjoying the comfort and creative exchange that is a welcome break from winter studio solitude.

Some may remember the pre-pandemic Woodshed of ‘yor — helmed by North Adams’ own Danny O — where camaraderie sparked joyful making — under one roof, a hive of many minds and hands . . . we the busy artist bees!

And so, Eclipse Mill offers to host a new edition of the Woodshed January 24-26, 2025, and invites local Berkshire Artists to apply to participate in this unique co-working environment.

We can accommodate up to 12 artists. If more than that apply, then we will engage in a lottery, with preference given to full-time Berkshire residents. Artists will receive a modest workspace in the Eclipse Mill gallery with a table and/or wall space, along with a stipend of $75 for supplies. Painters, sculptors, collage, multimedia artists, and writers of all disciplines are invited to apply. Musicians and songwriters welcome – please bring equipment that can be used with headphones.

The Woodshed will conclude with a public open studio where artists may share their work and progress on the Sunday afternoon.
